“Hank” Plays Jakarta
Here’s a blast from my (not so) distant past…
The Indonesia-America Friendship Association (Perhimpunan Persahabatan Indonesia-Amerika, PPIA) celebrated the 4th of July, 2002 with Tantowi Yahya on his weekly live national broadcast of “Country Road.” PPIA is an affiliate of Lembaga Bahasa & Pendidikan Profesional LIA, the institution for which I worked as a Language Consultant. In that capacity, I got called upon to do all sorts of things ranging from the humdrum to the ambassadorial ;->
The video clip below starts with the intro to the show (Indonesian & English), then cuts to a Square Dance, called by Pak Herman from Kalimantan!
There are 2 more clips over on YouTube:
“Hey Good Lookin’”
“Ramblin’ Man”
Getting these dusty ol’ clips off of VHS tape and on to the Web was no simple feat! How did I ever get by without Handbrake and VisualHub???

Great stuff, Hank— I love it. “Hey Good Lookin’” is especially nice. Thanks for sharing these.
How did

That never finished— sorry… how did you end up capturing the tape? What did you use for hardware and capture software?

Tanks, brudda! Well, I used a Lite-On DD-A100GX DVD recorder to capture the whole broadcast from the VCR directly onto a dvd. Then, on me trusty MacBook Pro, I used HandBrake to rip the dvd, and I converted the resulting file in VisualHub to the DV format (”Ready for FinalCut”). From there, I imported the DV file into Final Cut Express where I pulled out the desired clips, edited them and added a title shot from Fireworks. I exported the final products via QuickTime Conversion => DV stream (default settings). The resulting files were way too big for YouTube (800+ Mb each), so I ran them through VisualHub to get the more cozy mp4 file sizes. I then pushed the mp4 clips up on YouTube…. and now a word from our sponsor ;->

What great fun and fond memories these clips bring forth. And new ones just keep on building up. Alhamdulillah!
